City of St. Clair Shores Installs New Historical Signage

The St. Clair Shores Historical Commission was tasked with developing a Historical Marker Program for the City of St. Clair Shores. The project's goal was to highlight significant areas that contributed to the city's growth. These signs were strategically placed near historic sites where pedestrians could read them.

The area in which the City of St. Clair Shores sits offers a robust history. Initially inhabited by French settlers during the early 1700s, the land was used for logging, fur trade, and farming. Beginning in WWI and lasting through WWII, the area became a hub for gamblers, rum smugglers, and lakefront tourists alike. In 1951, St. Clair Shores was officially founded as the City of St. Clair Shores. Leading up to that point, it stood as the largest village in America. Throughout the 1950s, it became the fastest growing suburb in Detroit.

The St. Clair Shores Historical Commission has made a great effort to preserve and highlight this information, and has partnered with Pannier over the past 10 years to supply them with 14 signs that they have placed in historically significant areas throughout their community. They recently installed a Traditional T near the local marina to tell the history of Lac Ste. Claire. They also installed Single Pedestals for Blossom Heath Park, Van's Used Cars, and Lake Shore Church. These Low Profile signs were the perfect choice for their projects, allowing them to display a large amount of historical information on their panels without obstructing the reader's view.

At the onset of the project, the Historical Commission reviewed historical markers from several cities and the sign offerings from eight major companies. After numerous and lengthy discussions, the Commission selected Pannier Graphics as the vendor. The variety of designs, durability of the panels, and affordable cost were highly desirable. Additionally, Pannier provides templates and tools for graphic artists to use in the formatting process and is willing to collaborate closely with the graphic designer.

The city historical marker program has been instrumental in preserving the stories and images of people, buildings, and places that have significantly shaped our community's history. It helps us understand the impact and influence of these elements on our lives, ensuring that our heritage is not forgotten but celebrated and remembered for future generations.
